El Segundo PD’s traffic officers also engage in special enforcement details throughout the city and participate in community events, such as the Holiday Parade and the PTA Fun Run.

As experienced traffic collision investigators, our officers maintain the training, knowledge and equipment to investigate traffic collisions, including non-injury, injury, and fatality accidents.

El Segundo PD Traffic Cadets patrol the City daily to manage parking resources, enforce parking laws and respond to complaints. They provide traffic control for accidents, street closures, and special events. Our Traffic Cadets issue 8,000 citations each year to ensure that parking problems in the City are minimized.

Overnight parking of oversized vehicles, recreational vehicles and trailers is prohibited between the hours of 2:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. on all streets and highways within the City, unless such vehicles have been registered and have received an Oversized Vehicle Permit.

Residents may apply for and receive a limited number of permits that allow limited overnight parking on City streets.

About the Oversized Vehicle Ordinance:

• Regulates parking of oversized vehicles, RVs and trailers

• Prohibits the placement of electrical cords, cables and similar items between those vehicles and nearby property

To register an oversized vehicle, bring your California Driver’s License, current registration for the vehicle, and proof of residency, such as a utility bill or property tax form to the El Segundo Police Department, located at 348 Main Street, El Segundo, CA 9045, during normal business hours.

Oversized Vehicle Permit Form

1. The ordinance prohibits overnight parking of oversized vehicles, recreational vehicles and trailers between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on all streets and highways within the City. The prohibition for overnight parking of trailers includes both attached and detached trailers. 
2. The ordinance establishes an Oversized Vehicle Resident Registration Program. Any resident who owns an oversized vehicle, recreational vehicle or trailer that is parked within the City must register their vehicle with the Police Department. When a vehicle or trailer is registered, the Police Department will issue a sticker, which must be affixed to the registered vehicle. Importantly, registration alone does not allow the registered vehicle or trailer to park on City streets during overnight hours. Thus, even if a vehicle has been registered, unless it has been issued a permit, it may not lawfully park on a City street between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. and would be subject to citation and towing. 
3. The ordinance creates an Oversized Vehicle Parking Permit process, by which owners of registered vehicles may apply to receive an Oversized Vehicle Parking Permit which will allow an otherwise prohibited vehicle to park from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. for two consecutive days (i.e., 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. one day and 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following day). Residents may apply for and receive up to two consecutive permits at one time, and have the option to use such permits consecutively for a total of four consecutive days. Residents may request no more than 12 two-day Oversized Vehicle Parking Permits per quarter and no more than 48 of such permits per calendar year. A “quarter” for purposes of this ordinance is January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through December of each calendar year.
4. The ordinance also creates a similar permit process for both guests staying with City residents but who need to park their oversized vehicle, recreational vehicle or trailer adjacent to their host’s home. The ordinance also establishes a permit process for handicapped residents.
5. An oversized vehicle is defined as any vehicle that exceeds 22 feet in length, seven feet in width, or eight feet in height. An oversized vehicle does not include a pick-up truck or sport utility vehicles, which are less than 25 feet in length and 82” in height.
6. The ordinance restricts parking of oversized vehicles, recreational vehicles and trailers within 25 feet of an intersection. To eliminate possible safety hazards to pedestrians in the City, the ordinance also prohibits owners from running electrical cords, cables and hoses across or above sidewalks and streets from the oversized vehicle, recreational vehicle or trailer to a nearby property.

Our Animal Control Division provides superior animal care while supporting responsible pet ownership. We work to re-unite lost pets with their owners, help sick or injured animals, and inform the public about local wildlife.

We handle and investigate animal complaints and enforce animal-related laws, including licensing requirements, animal abandonment and prosecutions for animal cruelty — and we strive to make sure that any lost or stray animals are safely kept at our facility for the shortest time possible.

We want to make sure that lost pets are returned home, quickly and safely. Please protect your pets and increase the chances of recovery by making sure that dogs and cats are microchipped and registered in a pet recovery database, along with your up-to-date contact information.

Coyotes are wild animals and can pose a risk to people and pets. The goal of the El Segundo Police Department is to educate the public by fostering a relationship of mutual respect between wildlife and the community so we can live together safely.

California state law prohibits the relocation of coyotes. Trapping coyotes is not always the best solution. If you reduce the population, those left have a better food source and produce larger and stronger litters. If there is a particularly aggressive coyote in your neighborhood, we encourage you to call the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at (562) 342-7100.

El Segundo PD has two police dogs that assist field and detective operations. Our dogs are highly trained in the detection and apprehension of dangerous suspects, narcotics, lost and missing persons, and items of evidence.

The dogs' keen sense of smell helps officers conduct searches with greater safety and efficiency. Police officers selected to be dog handlers undergo lengthy training with their canine partners before they begin their duties together and our K-9 teams participate in weekly training sessions to maintain their readiness.

The K-9 units employ specifically modified patrol cars. The rear seats have been removed to provide room for a platform on which the dog can rest comfortably. Additionally, the officer can open the rear door via remote control, allowing his canine partner to exit the car when the officer chooses.

K-9 officers and their dogs share strong bond and rely on each other as true partners. Officers take their dog home at the end of each shift and the dog lives as a member of the officer’s family.
